Hsuanyu I

Cello

Hsuanyu (Sharon) is a cellist and music educator from Taiwan. She has a BM in cello performance and music education from the Taipei Municipal Education University, as well as a Masters in cello performance from Tunghai University under the direction of Arkadi Kuchynski. After moving to NYC in 2011 to attend NYU for music education, she now spreads her love of music to her many students and performs regularly throughout the tristate area.

At the age of 8, Hsuanyu began her musical studies on the piano but was enticed to learn cello by a competitive music talent program that required two instruments and inspired by a beautiful, long-haired cellist whom she saw on a television soap opera. With little time to prepare, Sharon barely squeaked by but was admitted to the program. From humble beginnings, this opportunity was a pivotal moment as she has grown to become the beautiful (but with slightly shorter-haired) cellist of her childhood dreams.

Back in Taiwan, Hsuanyu regularly performed in chamber ensemble and solo recitals. She co-composed an award-winning musical, Zigzag, recognized by Taiwan’s Council for Cultural Affairs and later adapted for orchestra. She also directed and performed in a play (Woman 30’s) that showcased her piano, cello, and ballroom dancing with her fellow musicians and dancers. Along with her musical pursuits, she enjoys ballroom dancing, meditating, and dabbling in real estate.

As a member of TCS since 2014, she is very excited to perform as a soloist with The Chelsea Symphony for the first time.
